BRICK, NJ — With electric vehicles becoming more commonly used, Brick Township officials are forming a committee to look at everything from purchasing vehicles to providing charging stations.
Brick Councilwoman Heather deJong said the committee is working to identify grants for the township to change over its gas- and diesel-powered vehicles to electric, she said.
“We can’t just flip our fleet automatically to electric vehicles,” she said. “That would cost an enormous amount of money.”
“We’re looking to do it gradually over time; it obviously seems to be the wave of the future,” deJong said.
The committee also is looking at adding charging stations and how best to make them available to the public.
There are two parks that are used frequently that are under consideration for the addition charging stations, she said.
New Jersey has an incentive program to help people purchase electric vehicles called Charge Up New Jersey. But the program has been put on hold for the second time this year after running out of money. The state committed $30 million in July and that funding was spent by mid-September, New Jersey Spotlight reported.
