Electric vehicle drivers, supporters, and intrigued local residents may attend Mt. Morris’ National Drive Electric Week Event (NDEW) to highlight the climate, clean air, and cost savings benefits provided by electric cars as part of the 11th annual NDEW Week.
The eleventh annual NDEW, a coast-to-coast celebration of electric vehicles (EVs), is being held September 25–October 3.
Vehicles at the event include several electric SUVs including the new Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4, electric sedans, and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Owners will offer ride-and-drives and are available to answer key questions. They will meet at the site of newly installed electric vehicle charging stations on Main St. which allows residents and local visitors to charge their vehicles while patronizing local businesses or exploring the Genesee Valley Greenway. There will also be additional activities for kids, information on how to reduce your energy usage, and information on how to enjoy the Genesee Valley Greenway.
“A switch to electric vehicles lowers your monthly gas and maintenance expenses and reduces air pollution; plus, these cars are incredibly fun, efficient and convenient to drive,” said Pat Harris, a volunteer leader with Sierra Club. “The Mt. Morris Drive Electric Week event showed our community how real people are enjoying these cars without the need for oil.”
There are now more than 1.5 million EVs on the road in the United States, and a recent survey by Consumer Reports and the Union of Concerned Scientists showed that more than 60% of prospective car buyers in the U.S. are interested in electric vehicles. There are now more than 40 models available in the U.S., with many of the newer models having a range of 200-300 miles or more.
In addition to electric vehicles, there will be several E-bikes at the event celebrating all forms of clean transportation. The Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway (FOGVG) encourages the use of trails and alternative modes of transportation as a means of reducing air pollution” stated FOGVG President Joan Schumaker. “Please note that Category 1 & 2 E-bikes may be used on the Greenway, but category 3 are not allowed. By June 1, 2022 all bikes must have a manufacturer’s sticker clearly indicating if it is a 1, 2, or 3.”
