Viktor Molnar, President of the Chassis System at Schaeffler Group said in many cases, crashes were caused by “the wrong reaction” of the driver. Mr Molnar said it may soon be possible for vehicles to “avoid accidents by relying on technology”.
Schaeffler is currently working on a range of automated technology which could soon be installed in road cars.
Schaeffler’s steer-by-wire system transmits driving and steering commands through electrical signals.
Mr Molnar said this technology was critical and would help open the way for autonomous driving.
The technology has so far been proven in the field with more than a billion kilometres of accident-free driving under its belt.
He told Express.co.uk: “This is preconditioned for autonomous driving.
“You need to have a fallback level for each application, we have proved it in use with this test drive.
“Basically, this means we don’t see any problem, any critical situations with the system.”
