Tesla Model S and X Plaid: AMD Ryzen four-core in the infotainment system

Tesla relies on AMD hardware to operate the infotainment system in the current Plaid versions of the Model S and Model X electric cars. Exactly which one, recently revealed the Youtube channel “Ingineerix”, who dismantled the mainboard unit and showed the individual chips.

While the standalone graphics card with Navi-23 GPU and an FP32 processing power of around 10 TFlops is one of the newest things you can get, the processor has been behind it for a few years. It has the model number YE180FC3T4MFG, which speaks for an offshoot of the Ryzen Embedded V1807B from AMD’s first Zen generation. The package structure with the characteristic metal frame and the elongated silicon chip indicated under the thermal paste support the assumption.

The YE180FC3T4MFG uses four Zen 1 cores with eight threads and an integrated Vega graphics unit with up to 11 compute units or 704 shader arithmetic units. According to AMD’s announcement from June 2021, the GPU of the combination processor is used when the 3D load is low; the large Navi-23 graphics card takes over for games.

8 GByte GDDR6-RAM

AMD uses the Navi-23 GPU in desktop PCs as the Radeon RX 6600 XT and Radeon RX 6600 with 32 and 28 compute units respectively, i.e. with a maximum of 2048 shader cores. Meanwhile, four memory modules with the label K4ZAF325BM can be seen on the graphics card corresponds to a total of 8 GB of GDDR6 RAM. It is not clear whether it is an HC14 or HC16 module. Depending on the situation, the memory achieves a transfer rate of 224 or 256 GB / s on 128 data lines. In the case of the main memory, the label on the four chips cannot be seen.

The bottom line is that Tesla’s infotainment system is the fastest of its kind and almost comparable to Sony’s Playstation 5 game console. It is not for nothing that Tesla advertises with gaming for the passengers – advertising images prominently show the action role-playing game “The Witcher 3”.
