Rolls on the roll: A luxury brand that produces fleets of electric vehicles

When the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost drove from London to Edinburgh and helped solidify the future of the car, the watch was put back 110 years and the history of the car was made.

Designed as an “experimental speedcar,” the Silver Ghost won the 1911 trial of speed, reliability, and durability fixed to top gear throughout the 799-mile return journey.

Last month, the same car repeated half of its feat over two days from the Royal Automobile Club in London’s Pall Mall (which oversaw the original trial) to Edinburgh, duplicating the original route as much as possible.

And this week, Rolls-Royce is making history again. On Wednesday, the company unveiled a sleek coupe-like limousine called the “Specter” with a cheeky nod to the release of the new 007 film. It will be launched as the first fully electric Rolls Royce at the end of 2023.

Prices for Specter range between £ 400,000 and £ 500,000, and the company states that all cars will be electric vehicles by 2030.

Boss believes it is the most important moment in Rolls-Royce history since the introduction of the prestigious Charles Rolls and engineer Sir Henry Royce.

The Rolls-Royce partnership began in 1904, but its origins can be traced back to the business founded in 1884 by Sir Henry Royce, one of the first electricians.

Lois built his first car in 1904 and met a new partner in May of that year. They reached an agreement that Rolls would sell Royce cars exclusively under the Rolls-Royce name.

Rolls defended and owned an early electric vehicle. He also had a charging station in the Fulham showroom for Brougham’s electric vehicles.

In 1904 he also agreed to represent the Contal Electromobile electric car, but when he saw Royce’s car, he canceled the contract. As a result, the internal combustion engine continued to dominate the motor.

Lawrence of Arabia, the British Army, and Maharaja of India were all fans of Rolls-Royce’s off-road prowess, as demonstrated in the 1907 reliability test.

Also in 1907, businessman Frank Norbury brought the brand to India by driving a 620-mile silver ghost through the mountains to Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

In World War I, a British commander armored Rolls-Royce and ran through a crater-filled landscape. They were also taken to China, Russia and the Middle East.

The October 1922 Tank Corps Journal states: “The most notable event since the war was the trip of three Rolls-Royce armored vehicles from Jerusalem to Baghdad.”

John Lennon of The Beatles owned a Rolls-Royce with a yellow psychedelic pattern.

And Russian Revolutionary Communist Party leader Vladimir Lenin was forced to seduce, enjoying a specially modified half-track silver ghost with skis for the winter.

Rolls-Royce has been under BMW control since 1998 after the battle with Volkswagen.

As a result, BMW secured the brand and built a factory in Goodwood. The first car manufactured and launched in 2003 was the modern phantom.

Over the last decade, Rolls-Royce has created two experimental electrical prototypes.

In 2011, I road-tested the Phantom EE (codename 102EX) based on an existing phantom and replaced the 6.75 liter V12 petrol engine and gearbox with a lithium-ion battery pack and two electric motors at 8 up to 60mph. The maximum speed was limited to 100mph in seconds.

Rolls-Royce won praise for its almost silent performance and innovation, including inductive charging and “wireless” charging, but the 125-mile range and 20-hour charging time remained a “significant hurdle.”

The second Electric Royce conducted a three-year world tour at the 2016 Vision Next 100 (103EX).

And now, what Rolls-Royce CEO Torstem Müller Otobos calls “real”. It is not a prototype, but a mass-produced car.

The “Specter” may reflect James Bond’s nemesis crime syndicate, but in the case of Rolls-Royce, it continues with the airy naming pattern that combines phantoms, wraiths, and ghosts.

Muller-Otvos said: ‘Electric motors are not new to Rolls-Royce. Sir Henry Royce’s first venture created a dynamo and patented a bayonet-style light bulb.

“I’m not happy that the technology available can support the Rolls-Royce experience. Until now.

“The electric drive is unique and perfectly suited for Rolls-Royce. It is quiet and sophisticated, producing torque almost instantly and producing tremendous power.

Rolls-Royce says power is the propulsion system that has come. In the 1900s, internal combustion engines were not the only option. There was also steam and electricity.

Steam turned out to be impractical. Electricity has “lost the battle” for two reasons, but it has a limited range and no charging station.

“But the characteristics that first attracted engineers to power (instantaneous torque, tremendous power, no exhaust) are still very attractive,” continued Muller-Otvos.

“Some speculate that Sir Henry Royce might have chosen only electricity for his car if he solved the range and charging issues.”
